Specimen Requirements

Serum or Plasma

Container: SST tube ONLY

Specimen Collection: 1 mL (minimum 0.5 mL)

  1. Allow specimen to clot completely. Separate serum (SST) from cells within 24 hours and transport refrigerated.
  2. Properly label tube with patient's name, DOB, requisition number and type of tube, i.e. SST.

 

Specimen Rejection

1. Grossly hemolyzed

2.  Wrong type of tube

3. Lipemic samples

Maximum Laboratory Time

1 - 2 days

Specimen Transport/Stability

Refrigerated: 24 hours on gel, 7 days poured off
