Organism Isolation
Specimen Requirements
Sterile Body Fluid
Container: Sterile-capped syringe (needle removed), sterile tube or container
Specimen Collection: > 10 mL (minimum 1 mL)
- Aspirate fluid with sterile syringe.
- If submitting fluid, needle must be removed and replaced with sterile cap. Otherwise, fluid may be transferred to a sterile tube or container.
- Submit as much fluid as possible.
- If anticoagulant is necessary, use SPS.
Specimen Transport/Stability
Room Temp: 24 hours
Refrigerated: Unacceptable
Frozen (-20℃ or - 70℃): Unacceptable
Specimen Rejection
1. Nonsterile or leaking containers
2. Specimens submitted with an anticoagulant other than SPS
3. Syringes with needle attached
Maximum Laboratory Time
5 - 10 days
