Specimen Requirements
Whole Blood
Container: Blood Culture Vials
Specimen Collection:
- 1 BacT/ALERT pediatric (yellow) bottle.
- Remove plastic flip-top from the bottle and disinfect the rubber septum with an alcohol pad.
- Disinfect venipuncture site on patient with appropriate disinfectant.
- Aseptically draw 1 - 5 mL of blood into a syringe or directly into the vial using the appropriate safety device.
- In addition to patient information, bottles must be labeled with date, time, site of collection, and volume of collection.
- Send ASAP at room temperature.
Specimen Transport/Stability
Room Temp: 24 hours
Refrigerated: Unacceptable
Frozen (-20℃): Unacceptable
Maximum Laboratory Time
Positive phoned as soon as detected.
Negative preliminary at 24, 48, 72 hours and final at 5 days.
Positive culture: ID & Susceptibility 2 -3 days.
