Include: Patient's temperature, oxygen intake, Allen's test performed, and location patient drawn.

Some plastic syringes may allow loss of oxygen.

Specimen Requirements

Arterial Whole Blood

Container: Capped syringe designed for blood gases

Specimen Collection: 1 mL  (minimum 0.2 mL)

  1. Contact NVH Laboratory for collection procedure.
  2. 1 mL arterial whole blood with 120 IU lyophilized heparin added to syringe designed for blood gases.
  3. Cap with stopper.
  4. Test must be performed immediately upon obtaining specimen.
  5. Maximum stability is 30 min at room temperature.
