Methodology

Specimen Requirements

Whole Blood

Container: Green top Lithium heparin whole blood

Specimen Collection: 2 mL (minimum 0.1 mL)

  1. For steady state lactate concentrations, patients should be at rest for 2 hours and fasting. Physicians may request this without 2 hours at rest or fasting.
  2. Venous samples should be obtained without the use of a tourniquet or immediately after tourniquet is applied. (Tourniquet should not be on for more than 1 minute.)
  3. Store and transport on ice or refrigerated.

On Ice: 30 minutes

1. Hemolyzed specimen

2. Centrifuged specimen
