Specimen Requirements
Plasma
Container/Tube: Light Blue Top (3.2% buffered sodium citrate, with yellow-striped label) tube
Specimen Volume: Full Tube
Collection: Send whole blood in original tube
- It is imperative that tube is completely filled.
- Ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid coagulation results.
- If specimen will arrive at Logan Health Whitefish >8 hours after draw, process specimen as follows:
- Spin for 10 minutes at 3,500 rpm (1500 g).
- Remove plasma from cells and place in a clean, plastic vial if greater than 8 hours and freeze spun plasma at -20C.
Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable
Specimen Transport/Stability
Room Temp (20 ±3 C) - 8 hours
Frozen - (- 20 Celsius) > 8 hours Plasma for up to 2 weeks or at -70C for up to 12 months.
Specimen Rejection
- Severely Hemolyzed
- Clotted samples
- Inappropriately filled tubes
- Specimens more than 8 hours old that have not been separated and frozen at less than -20 Celsius
