Specimen Requirements

Plasma

Container/Tube: Light Blue Top (3.2% buffered sodium citrate, with yellow-striped label) tube

Specimen Volume: Full Tube

Collection: Send whole blood in original tube

  1. It is imperative that tube is completely filled.
  2. Ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid coagulation results.
  3. If specimen will arrive at Logan Health Whitefish >8 hours after draw, process specimen as follows:
    • Spin for 10 minutes at 3,500 rpm (1500 g).
    • Remove plasma from cells and place in a clean, plastic vial if greater than 8 hours and freeze spun plasma at -20C. 

Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable

Specimen Transport/Stability

Room Temp (20 ±3 C) -  8 hours

Frozen - (- 20 Celsius) > 8 hours Plasma for up to 2 weeks or at -70C for up to 12 months.

Specimen Rejection

  • Severely Hemolyzed
  • Clotted samples
  • Inappropriately filled tubes
  • Specimens more than 8 hours old that have not been separated and frozen at less than -20 Celsius
