Initial Screen and Confirmation

Specimen Requirements

Pool of Multiple Meconium Collections

Container: Leakproof Polypropylene

Specimen Collection: 3 grams (minimum 2 grams)

  1. Collect meconium until milk stool appears.
  2. Place non-absorbent polyethylene diaper liner in diaper. 
  3. Transfer meconium from diaper liner to collection container using the spatula provided. 
  4. Avoid any contact of ethanol liquid or vapor.
  5. Store refrigerated and protected from light. 
  6. Place name and ID number on Custody and Control Form (COC) and meconium container. Sign the form for each collection.
  7. When collection is completed, place the bar-coded tamper evident seal (from COC form) over the top of the lid, sealing the matching meconium container. Intial and date the seal. Mark the form with the test(s) that have been ordered. Complete and sign the form.
  8. Place the completed top cop of the COC form in the large pouch of the plastic specimen bag provided (COPY 1 - LAB COPY). Place the meconium container in the small pouch of the specimen bag, and seal the bag. 
  9. Place the specimen bag in the cardboard box. Place the box in the courier's overwrap used for exempt clinical-sample shipments.
  10. Contact your courier for pick-up.
