Specimen Requirements
Umbilical Cord
Container: Leakproof Polypropylene
Specimen Collection: 6 - 8 inches
- Cut a 6-inch segment of umbilical cord and drain and discard any blood.
- Rinse the cord segment exterior with normal saline or an equivalent rinsing solution.
- Avoid an contact of ethanol liquid or vapor with the umbilical cord.
- Pat the specimen dry, and place the umbilical cord segment into the umbilical cord container.
- Place name and ID number on Custody and Control Form (COC) and umbilical cord container. Mark form with test(s) that have been ordered. Complete and sign form.
- Place the completed top copy of COC form in the large pouch of the plastic specimen bag provdided. (Copy 1 - LAB COPY)
- Place the umbilical cord container in the small pouch of the specimen bag, and seal the bag.
- Place the specimen bag in the cardboard box. Place the box in the courier's overwrap used for exempt clinical-sample shipments.
- Contact your courier for pick-up.
- Store refrigerated in secure area until ready to be shipped.
