Specimen Requirements

Plasma

 

Container/Tube: Blue Top (buffered sodium citrate)

Specimen Volume: Fill tube to appropriate line, no minimum

Collection:

  • Specimen may be sent centrifuged (centrifuge specimens for 10 minutes at 3500 rpm) or un-centrifuged with plasma remaining on top of cells in an unopened tube, kept at ROOM TEMPERATURE 20±5° Celsius for no longer than 8 hours.
  • If testing cannot be performed within 8 hours, platelet-poor plasma should be removed from the cells and frozen at -20 Celsius for up to 1 month or at -70 Celsius for up to 12 months.
  • Properly label tube with patients name, DOB, requisition number and if plasma has been separated: type of tube sample drawn from. i.e. BLUE.

Specimen Transport/Stability

Room Temperature- 8 hours

Frozen - (-20 Celsius) 1 month if platelet poor plasma has been separated from cells.

Frozen - (-70 Celsius) 12 months if platelet poor plasma has been separated from cells. 

Specimen Rejection

Unacceptable:

  • Clotted
  • Hemolyzed
  • Exceeded stability requirements
  • Under or overfilled tube
  • Unlabeled specimen
  • Greater than 8 hours room temperature

Maximum Laboratory Time

24 hours
