Specimen Requirements
Serum and 24-hour Urine Collection
Container: SST tube ( or green top) and 24-hour dark plastic urine container
Specimen Collection: 2 mL serum and 40 mL urine (minimum 0.2 mL serum and 1 mL urine)
- Collect a 24-hour urine in a 24-hour dark plastic urine container. Refrigerate during collection. Urine may be collected with 25 - 30 mL of Hydrochloric acid.
- Allow specimen to clot completely if a serum tube (SST) was used.
- Separate serum (SST) or plasma (Lithium Heparin) from cells within 24 hours and transport refrigerated. If red top tube is collected, separate serum from cells within 2 hours and place in separate plastic tube.
- Properly label tube with patient's name, DOB, requisition number and type of tube, i.e. GREEN.
- Aliquot 40 mL of a well-mixed 24-hour urine collection into a leakproof plastic urine container.
- Record collection time and total volume.
- Store and transport both specimens refrigerated.
Alternate Specimens: Lithium heparin plasma (green top) and urines preserved in the boric acid tubes (BD C&S tubes.)
Specimen Transport/Stability
Refrigerated: 24 hours on gel, 7 days poured off
