Specimen must be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection or will be rejected.

Specimen Requirements

Serum or Plasma

Container/Tube: SST or Lithium Heparin

Alternate: Red Top

Specimen Volume: 1 mL (0.5 mL minimum)

Collection:

  1. Allow specimen to clot completely if a serum tube (SST) was used for the draw. Separate (centrifuge) serum (SST) or plasma (Lithium Heparin) from cells within 2 hours of collection and transport refrigerated.
  2. If Red Top tube is collected, separate serum from cells within 2 hours and place in separate plastic tube and cap immediately.
  3. Properly label tube with patients name, DOB, requisition number and type of tube sample drawn, I.e. Green.

Specimen Transport/Stability

Refrigerate - 24 hours on gel, 7 days pour off.

 

Specimen Rejection

  1. Under-filled Tube
  2. Specimen not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection
  3. Unlabeled Specimen
  4. Clotted or Hemolyzed Specimen
  5. Specimen exceeds stability requirements
