Test Code BMP.1 BASIC METABOLIC PANEL (BMP), TOTAL CA

Important Note

Hemolysis will cause elevated potassium values and minimal volumes will concentrate

Whole blood green top Lithium heparin can be run on alternate Chemistry Analyzer which includes Chem B with Ionized Calcium, this specimen must reach lab within 10 minutes.

Specimen must be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection or will be rejected.

Additional Codes

N.BMP

Methodology

ALINITY Automated Chemistry Analyzer

Specimen Requirements

Serum or Plasma

Container/Tube: SST or Green top Lithium Heparin

Specimen Volume: 1 mL (0.5 mL minimum)

Collection:

  1. Allow specimen to clot completely if a serum tube (SST) was used for the draw.
  2. Separate (centrifuge) serum (SST) or plasma (Lithium Heparin) from cells within 2 hours of collection and transport refrigerated.
  3. If Red Top tube is collected, separate serum from cells within 2 hours and place in separate plastic tube and cap immediately.
  4. Properly label tube with patient's name, DOB, requisition number and type of tube sample drawn, I.e. Green.

Specimen Transport/Stability

Refrigerated: 24 hours on gel, 7 days poured off

Specimen Rejection

1.  EDTA, sodium citrate or sodium fluoride-oxalate plasma specimen

2.  Specimen not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection

3.  Under-filled Tube

4.  Unlabeled Specimen

5.  Clotted or Hemolyzed Specimen

6.  Specimen exceeds stability requirements
