Specimen Requirements

Body Fluid

Container: Red top tube (plain) or leakproof plastic container

Specimen Collection: 5 mL (minimum 1 mL)

  1. Specimen container should be tightly capped with minimal free air space. Limit exposure of sample to air.
  2. Promptly and carefully separate fluid from cells and place in separate plastic tube.

Specimen Transport/Stability

Room Temp: 1 hour tightly capped

Refrigerated: 24 hours but not preferred

Frozen (-20℃): 6 months - the preferred method but must be separated from cells

 

Specimen Rejection

1. Highly viscous samples

Maximum Laboratory Time

24 hours
